The 1999 United States Ryder
Cup team is going to be fighting for redemption, and despite some
recent controversy surrounding the financials, this year's US squad
is set to play at The Country Club .
With 7 Europeans in the lineup with no Cup experience, it
appears the European Team has their work cut out for them. In
contrast, the United States team has only 2 players new to the
competition, and Hal Sutton is a seasoned veteran.
The European captain, Mark
James at the age 45, has a great deal of Ryder Cup experience
himself, Yet committed to being a non-playing captain.
His excellent play of late combined with his experience may prove to
be a substantial loss to the team.
The US captain, Ben Crenshaw, has a potential matchup of matchups
to consider with the young and aggressive, 19 year old Spaniard,
Sergio Garcia against the now veteran,
23 year old, Tiger Woods. |
|
With nine elevated tees,
some blind shots, and a grueling back nine, The Country Club will prove
to be quite a test. Home of the 1988 US Open Championship and designed by Rees
Jones, the course was founded in 1882 and is located just west of Boston.
|
|
Tiger Woods will have to be the
emotional leader of a United States Ryder Cup team hungry for victory.
With his win in the PGA Championship, he seems ready to take charge.
|
|
Sergio Garcia took the golf world by storm
by firing a final round 7-under par 64 to capture the PGA European Tour's
Murphy's Irish Open earlier this Summer. Garcia turned professional in April,
following his performance at the 1999 Masters
where he became the first European golfer ever to win low amateur honors.
